Employer of the Week: Discover

Discover provides banking and credit products that help you achieve your goals by learning how to spend smarter, manage debt better, and save more to achieve a brighter financial future. On top of all of that — Discover hires and supports veterans. 

"For me, this is important because when I got out in 2004 I was one of the first of the veterans that was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan that got out. There wasn't this support group to get people where they wanted to go and help them transition from the military to the civilian world," said Carl Chandler, lead operational risk specialist with Discover. "I want to help veterans figure out what they want to do sooner so they're not in that transition period not knowing where to go and lost without direction."

Chandler works with Discover to help veterans transition from military service to civilian careers. He is the chairperson of the company's veterans employee resource group, and attends events like the Illinois Hires Heroes Consortium Veterans Expo to make sure veterans in his area know about the opportunities available.

"We go to all these different events and meet new veterans every month and just try to help them tailor their resumes, translate their roles and responsibilities from the military into roles and responsibilities that would work in the corporate environment," Chandler said. 

And there's more to Discover than just accounting. 

"We're a veteran-friendly employer and we're not just a bank," Chandler said. "We have jobs that run the gambit from physical security to finance. People see Discover and think it's just a bunch of accountants and that's not what we are."
