Our Employer of the Week also believes it is important to support veterans as they transition from the military into the civilian workforce, said Marcie Rivera, media relations specialist.
Marcie Rivera said the 101-store supermarket chain has locations in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts and North Carolina.
“The family company, recognized as an industry leader and innovator, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016,” she added.
Named as one of Fortune Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” for 23 consecutive years, it ranked third on the list this year.
“The company was also ranked number one for corporate reputation among the 100 most visible companies, according to the 2019 Harris Poll Reputation Quotient study,” Rivera added.
Wegmans belief in the importance of military service begins with the family itself, she explained. Company founder Robert Wegman. He joined the company in 1937 and became a store manager in 1947 at the age of 29, following a stint in the Marine Corps. He became company president in 1950.
“His experience upon returning to the country he served led to our commitment to military service members and their families during their transition to civilian life,” Rivera said. “We think of our employees as family and support them as such, with tools and benefits designed to help them learn, grow and thrive.”
The company has established connections with the military community through its partnerships with AMVETS, Veterans Outreach Center, Hire Purpose and military bases located near its stores to help make transitioning civilian life easier for its veteran employees and families, she added.
In addition, Wegmans makes the pay of its employees who serve in the Reserves “whole” while they are active duty. Health care and retirement plan contributions also continue, Rivera said.
