Employer of the Week Newport News Shipbuilding believes in the power of hiring vets
Nothing is more important to Employer of the Week Newport News Shipbuilding than the recruiting, hiring and retaining of veterans and their families.
“Not only is it right to support our veterans, but hiring ex-military is just a smart business decision,” said Sultan Camp, military recruiter at the company. “Our core values at Newport News Shipbuilding aligns well with the core values of our veterans.”
Service veterans currently make up 18% of the Newport News Shipbuilding workforce, according to Camp.
Newport News Shipbuilding is a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries. It is the nation’s sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two shipyards capable of designing and building nuclear-powered submarines.
“We also provide fleet services for naval ships,” added Camp. “Our legacy as the builder of the most complex ships in the world goes back 134 years.”
Newport News Shipbuilding is also the largest industrial employer in Virginia, employing more than 25,000 people.
“In this COVID-19 environment, Newport News Shipbuilding has collaborated with the transition offices at various military installations to participate in virtual employer panels,” Camp continued. “We also regularly hosts virtual career information sessions specifically tailored to transitioning service members, veterans and military spouses.”
The company also supports a number of military hiring initiatives, including:
Partnering with Hiring Our Heroes, Hiring Our Heroes Military Spouse and USO Pathfinder for Military Spouse Career Workshops and Networking events. It also partners with Virginia Transition Program and Virginia Values Veterans to support networking/hiring events.
The company also hosts hiring events with the Virginia Veterans Employment Center and teams with area career counselors to present at their pre-separation counseling events for active duty service members.
