There's Pride In Service at CSX

June 2, 2020

Employer of the Week CSX takes pride in the service of its veteran employees.

The company, headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, is a premier transportation company, said CSX Director of Corporate Citizenship John Kitchens.

“We provide rail, intermodal and rail-to-truck transload services and solutions to customers across a broad array of markets, including energy, industrial, construction, agricultural and consumer products,” he said.

For nearly 200 years, CSX has played a critical role in the nation’s economic expansion and industrial development, Kitchens explained.

“Overall, the CSX network encompasses about 21,000 route miles of track in 23 states, the District of Columbia and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Our rail network connects every major metropolitan area in the eastern United States, where nearly two-thirds of the nation’s population resides,” he said.

The CSX network also links more than 230 short-line railroads and more than 70 ocean, river and lake ports with major population centers and farming towns alike. In addition, the company moves a broad range of products across the country in a way that minimizes the effect on the environment, takes traffic off an already congested highway system, and minimizes fuel consumption and transportation costs," Kitchens said.

“Many of the communities we touch have high concentrations of military families and we have deep connections to and gratitude for the first responders in and around the towns and cities that dot our 21,000-mile network,” he added.

In 2018, CSX launched Pride in Service, a company-wide commitment to honor and serve those who serve the country and its communities — veterans, military, and first responders. He added that CSX is “incredibly proud that more than 3,700 veterans, active-duty military and first responders have chosen to work at CSX – that’s one out of every five employees.”

CSX connected more than 85,000 service members and family members with the support they needed in 2019, one year after Pride In Service was launched, Kitchens said.

“Given the natural cultural connection of service between railroaders and service members, our human resources and operations teams are committed to recruiting and retaining talented employees with a service background,” he said.

Kitchens noted that Wounded Warrior Project is one of  five premier CSX Pride in Service partners and “as a top military employer in Jacksonville, CSX military recruiters have planned events with WWP focused on hiring veterans as well giving veterans tools and resources that will help aid them in their career search.”

These events range from lunch and learns, mock interviews, salary negotiation info sessions, and one-on-one meetings with veterans. CSX also provides onboarding and training for new employees, as well as mentoring through our employee resource groups.
