Complete courses before you leave the military with the Home Builders Institute
Our Employer of the Week series features one company each week that has made a commitment to hiring and supporting veterans. This week’s employer is the Home Builders Institute.
The Home Builders Institute is a national leader for career training in the building industry. The institute offers certification programs, mentoring, pre-apprenticeships, and job placement services for individuals to have a career building homes. They also have specific programs in place to support service members transitioning into the civilian workforce.
The Home Builders Institute works with the Department of Defense transition assistance programs to offer 12-week training during the last 180 days of a service member's career — so by the time they separate from the military, they already have all the training they need. The Home Builders Institute can even assist with job placement for program graduates.
The institute offers courses across a wide range of building industry professions including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
"Everybody wants to give back to the men and women who have served our country," said Ed Brady, Home Builders Institute President and CEO. "These programs — that the military has helped provide — give our soldiers that have served our country a skill that they can hit the ground running with when they get out."
Thanks to a $50 million grant from Home Depot, the program is growing nationally and will eventually train 1,000 service members a year.
And, thanks to the DoD Skillbridge program, a transition program offered through the Department of Defense, it's free.
